Star Legend, a cruise ship of an American cruise company Windstar Cruises, made a port call at Miyako on May 6, 2018. We recruited interpreters and volunteer staffs and allocated them.
Interpreters and volunteer staffs were allocated at the information counter at Fujiwara Wharf, shuttle bus stops, Miyako Station, Suehiro-cho, Naado Marketplace, Jodogahama Beach, etc., and helped foreign passengers and crew members. Furthermore, we set up special booths at the port where we offered services of writing their names in Japanese characters and of kimono dressing, as a part of hospitality services.
23 interpreters, 11 university/college students, 57 high school students, and 15 junior high school students joined us to welcome foreign guests. It seems that it was a good opportunity for students to realize the importance of learning English. Some students told us that they came to be interested in working in the field of international relations or in English related work, thanks to this experience.
